Cefuroxime is a second generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic. It was discovered by Glaxo (now GlaxoSmithKline) and introduced in 1978 under the brand name Zinacef. It was approved by FDA on Oct 19, 1983, and is marketed in US under the trade names Ceftin by GlaxoSmithKline, and Zinacef by Covis Pharma (according to FDA Orange Book) . In Bangladesh it is sold under the trade name of Turbocef by Beximco Pharma Ltd. In India it is available as Supacef by GSK.Cefuroxime axetil is an acetoxyetyl ester prodrug of Cefuroxime which is effective orally. GlaxoSmithKline sells the antibiotic in the United Kingdom (and other countries, such as Australia, Turkey, Israel, Bangladesh, Thailand, Hungary and Poland) under the name Zinnat.
